So this happened!
The door has become unhinged! While working in the bedroom the other day I wondered why the door of the wardrobe would not stay closed. This was part of the first bedroom suite we purchased just before our marriage in 1978. We had to carry out a few repairs in the first year or so but since then it has been moved each time we moved, stood up to the abuses of small five children and numerous grandchildren. So was I surprised when I discovered that the door had come unhinged? Not really! You see I knew that the hinge was getting loose and I didn’t do anything to fix it.
Thinking about this, I wondered if many people think that society is a bit the same way – unhinged. What does it mean to be unhinged anyway? It means that things don’t work properly. I ask you, is our society working properly?
Do we care enough about people to respect their property? Some people do, absolutely, but those who rob and destroy don’t. Do we care enough about people being abused? Some do but those who use violence against their fellowman, women and children, here at home and overseas don’t. Do we look out for each other? Some do but those greedy people who take from the poor just to make themselves rich, don’t.
Yes, I think that our society is a bit like that wardrobe door, it is unhinged. How did it get like that? Most likely in much the same way as that wardrobe door. We failed to notice that it was falling apart or if we did, we were too busy to do anything to fix it.
How do we fix our society then? That is easy “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself…” Leviticus 19:18
