Grass

While having lunch with a friend we got talking about what Christians look like. We discussed that we often stereotype people. They should behave in the certain manner, say the right things all the time and dress a particular way. We chatted about how we have polished up the cross that Jesus died on and the servants of God. We try to ignore their rough, tough exteriors and their disobediences, in other words we have polished them up. These servants of God were tough rough and sinful. They made mistakes, sometimes big ones but God loved them and used them for His glory despite all of their faults.

So what does this have to do with grass, I hear you ask. When I post comments or talk about my garden and mowing, I always say that I have been outside mowing the grass, not the lawn. Why? As far as I’m concerned my yard is not covered in lawn, it is covered in grass. What is the difference you might well ask? In my mind a lawn is made up of a particular type of grass and the whole area should be covered with all the same variety. The large area that I consider to be my backyard is currently hardly covered with grass at all and certainly it is not covered with the same variety. In fact it is also comprised of what many people would consider to be weeds. So I am, from today, going to change my thinking and remember that all those different varieties of grass are all good for something. They help cover my ground and therefore there is no reason for me to not call it “Lawn”.

“So we being many are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.” Romans 12:5
