Closed Door
How many times have I come up against a closed door. You know about the times I’m talking about. When circumstances blocks your entry into some area of endeavour you can either push harder, relax and wait or walk away. Closed doors are not the same as locked doors. Many women throughout history have had to push into the areas of endeavour that they had previously been considered locked out of.
In the past many jobs were considered to be inappropriate for women to carry out. Personally I take my hat off to any woman who worked under the social and physical conditions that existed. I am so very grateful to the women who have been worked so hard to improve the circumstances for us. These women have often had to push very hard against some of those doors that appeared to be closed. Even today many women have to continue to march forward into career areas that are still considered more suitable to the male domain.
Of course it’s not only women who have had to push hard to ensure that progress happens in our world. There are the reformers of the Victoria era, such as Captain Cook who sailed around the world to find Australia. There was also William Wilberforce who fought for years to abolish slavery in the 18th century. Closer to home there is the long list of explorers who pushed through the Australian bush and deserts to find out about our wide amazing country.
Modern door pushers are those who are working on the exploration of outer space, modern technology and medical research but I fear that we are going to have revisit those doors that have seemed to have slammed closed again such as human rights, education and social conditions for people living in less fortunate circumstances.
