I hear
Most summer nights I hear the noise from the wings of mosquitoes, they come so close to my face that I can feel the air moving against my skin. The noise also kept me awake for several hours last night. These small creatures can make life very uncomfortable for so many of us, particularly after they have bitten us, leaving itchy lumps on the body.
There is an African proverb that says: “If you think you’re too small to make a difference, you haven’t met a mosquito”. The other one saying doing the rounds of the internet which I like is: “I want to be so full of Jesus that when a mosquito bites me, he flies away singing ‘there is power in the blood’.”
There are many ways of dealing with these pests, sprays, repellents, candles; I even remember using mosquito coils that smelt terrible. My father tells of having to spray mosquitoes in Mount Isa before they held a church service as well as again half way through, finally sweeping them up by the dustpan full after the meeting.
As I was irritated by a few of these creatures last night I thought they remind me of the sins in my life, they are annoying, making my life uncomfortable and they need to be got rid of. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if I could just get out a spray can and kill all my sins off? Even a can of “sin off” would be helpful, this would mean that I couldn’t be tempted by sin, oh what a dream! There is only one way to deal with sin and that is to come to God and confess our sins and ask for forgiveness.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
