I am currently reading a poem that I wrote for Mum and Dad’s 40th Wedding Anniversary. The reason is because today is our 37th Anniversary and the first that we don’t get to celebrate with Mum and Dad. If you are thinking that is strange, let me enlighten you, we were married on Mum and Dad’s 22nd Wedding Anniversary.
When we were in the planning stages we had a couple of weekends to pick from, one was my parent’s anniversary and the next was my in-laws anniversary. In those days the bride’s parents still paid so my parents got the privilege or otherwise depending on your point of view.
If mum had still been here today, they would have celebrated 59 years together. Yes we were planning a big bash for next year but these things are not to be.
I’m not going to kid around and tell you that we lived happily ever after once the Wedding was over. Isn’t that how is supposed to happen, the trials and tribulations are in the lead up to the wedding and then a couple get married and they walk off into the sunset, dancing into an eternity of wedded bliss. What I am going to tell you is; we have had more downs than ups, sickness, miscarriages, financial stress and grief has been a very large part of those 37 years and if it wasn’t for the strength of God and the wisdom of my mother I could have easily walked away.
The Bible reading at our ceremony was 1 Corinthians 13:1- 13 and this poem is based on verse seven which says: “Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” We can only do this by allowing the LOVE of God flow through us.
