Makes Me Smile
I wrote a story a few years ago, about a walk along a beach. During that walk we came across a little girl and her father building a sandcastle. It was nearly finished and dad was building the mote to be filled with water once the tide came in close enough. However this little girl was impatient and she was dancing at the water’s edge waving to the waves trying to entice them to come in and fill the mote right there and then. Every time I think about this little girl it makes me smile. It was such a cute thing for her to do.
I wonder if God smiles at us when we try to do the same thing as this little girl. Do I hear you say: “But we are adults, we know better, you cannot force waves to come in and fill a hole by waving your arms about.” Do we know better really? How many times do we make plans to do something and then tell God we are going to do it, often without even asking Him about them first? Some of us even tell God we are never going to do something.
People ask me why I married a farmer, particularly after they find out that I don’t particularly like animals or farming. My response is: “When I was a teenager I told God that I would never marry a farmer and He just smiled and said ‘We’ll see.”
In James 4:14-15 we read “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”
