On The Wall
In our family room hangs a canvas photo that was taken during the driest time we have experienced during our time here at Glenburnie Homestead. When I decided to get it printed my children objected on the grounds that we didn’t need to be constantly reminded of how bad the country looked during that spell. They felt that the memories would be too depressing for their father who struggled back then. I consulted him before I went ahead, which meant that the print would no longer be the surprise that I wanted it to be but that turned out to be alright.
He approved of the project on the grounds at photos are a snap shot in time. As he stated the only other aerial photo we have showed the country looking green but the green was thistles not pasture.
The interesting thing about past memories is that we often remember things to be better than they were. The Israelites did this when they were standing on the outskirts of the Promised Land. When faced with the challenges ahead of them, they forgot how hard life was back in Egypt.
When we look at this photo, we are reminded of how dry things were. We also remember of how God took care of us during such a tough time. When we turn our eyes from the photo to the green pastures outside we thank God for the rain that has fallen. It also makes us aware that things could get that bad again sometime in the future. Maybe when that time comes we might do what Peter instructed us to do with more confidence “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” 1 Peter 5:7, something I lacked last time. Hopefully I have learnt this lesson.
