Pointy
Why do we make things pointy? In my experience it usually means that we want to show people where to go. It is most likely related to the tradition of using our index finger to point to somewhere or someone. Of course there are always the exception some pointy things are just purely decorative.
In the case of road signs, the point should be towards the direction you want people to go not where they have come from. If road signs did actually point you to where you had come from they would be the most useless things in existence. You would be a very strange person if you did not know where you had come from.
When it comes to travelling our life’s journey Paul tells us to not look back while we are trying to move forward in life. “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,” Philippians 3:13 We all need to keep our eyes on where we are going, not where we have been.
What about the pointy structures on church buildings called church steeples? These too, are meant to direct people to think about heavenly things rather than earthly things. Paul encourages us to do this in Colossians 3:1-2 “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”
There are signs that actually point in the wrong direction and if we follow them we end up in the wrong place or completely lost. God however always knows where we are and can bring us home as soon as we ask.
