Hobby
Definition according to Wikipedia: “A hobby is a regular activity that is done for pleasure, typically during one's leisure time. Hobbies can include collecting themed items and objects, engaging in creative and artistic pursuits, playing sports, or pursuing other amusements.”
So according to this definition my hobby is writing. I used to sew and knit but materials became too expensive and time was in very short supply when I was working outside the home. My photography is only just passable but thankfully with the advent of digital cameras it is at much less expensive than it used to be. Gone are the days when I would take a photos, wait for them to be processed, paid money for the results, only to find that I had not created something not worth looking at. Gardening has it good points but is a seasonal thing for me.
So back to writing, I mostly use a computer to carry out this hobby but over the last couple of days I have been reminded that the old fashioned pen and paper has its place. My mother starting sending her sister cards instead of making regular phone calls when her sister’s hearing and memory was starting to deteriorate. The cards could be read over and over again but a phone call would be forgotten almost as soon as the call ended. The card was one way for her sister to know that she wasn’t forgotten and she was loved. For those without modern technology available the old fashion methods still have great value.
It’s not about keeping an old tradition alive but about being relevant to those who don’t have the same advantages as I do. “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” Luke 6:31
