Building
Building bridges is hard work. Bridges are built for different reasons. They may help cars cross over water as in the Sydney Harbour Bridge. They may simply make it possible for a train to cross over a gully. They come in all manner of sizes, styles, colours and are made out of a great range of products.
It also reminds me that in every relationship we have we have to build bridges as well. We have to find a way for two very different people, from different backgrounds, with different tastes, different plans and dreams to connect to each other.
In order for us to do this we must put the interests of others first. This is hard work for most of us as we are inclined to want to put our own interests, tastes, desires and dreams before those of any one else. We can spend years building bridges and working at a relationship and then something might happen that brings it all down and we either have to pick up the pieces and put it back together, start again or walk away.
Each bridge that we build will be different, because each person that we have a relationship with will be different. Of course there are some people that will not what to have a relationship with us and it won’t matter how much building we do it will be ignored or discarded. That is their choice and we should not be too stressed about it. The exercise that we get trying, will be of some benefit, even if it is to only teach us something.
But there is one person who will always desire to build a relationship with us and that is Jesus Christ. He built that bridge on Good Friday many years ago by dying on the Cross.
