Fluffy
We have a great variety of grasses on our farm but there is one in particular that is not very useful. It has a fluffy seed head and sheep don’t like to eat it so it is considered a bit of a pest. As I thought about this plant and its seed, I understood why the seed was the way it was. It’s made in such a manner to ensure that it’s light enough to float in the wind and that will make sure that the grass survives. I also thought about how many weeds have similar characteristics in the way their seeds are spread. This makes controlling weeds a little difficult and I did think that it’s a pity that good grasses and plants have a harder time spreading their seeds around the paddock.
I also thought about those other weeds that spread easily, the weeds of discouragement, slander and lies. Once they are in the wind they seem to take on a life of their own and just like that grass they are not very pleasant but spread fast causing sadness and ruining lives. It takes a lot of work to recover from the effects of such infestations, if you ever can.
It takes a lot of self-control or temperance to make sure that we are not party to spreading those sorts of seeds ourselves. We need to keep our hearts and eyes on Jesus Christ so that we develop those fruits of the spirit we find in Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
Let’s all be diligent in spreading good seeds of encouragement and truth and help lift those who are struggling in life, rather than loading them with heavier burdens.
