In my garden I have a Dahlia Tree. It is positioned in a protected corner behind the shed. They seem to flower very late in the season just about the time the frosts start to cover the ground some mornings. The plant grows high enough so the flowers can be seen only by looking up into the sky and so high light frosts don’t kill the flower. It could be said that the flowers are up in the air.

As I enjoy the beauty of the flowers I am reminded that my mother used to say that some Christians are so angelic, always up in the air harping, that they were of no earthly use. I know that high ideals and looking up are good things. It is also important that when it comes to relating to those people on the ground who are coping with the frosts of life, I need to be real and down to earth.

In Matthew 25:31-46 we read about how on judgement day God will separate the sheep from the goats. The sheep represent those people who have helped their fellow citizens by giving them food, clothes and shelter, very ordinary and necessary things for everyone to survive. These are the “down to earth” things that we are to do to help those who have found themselves out in the cold.

“And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Matthew 25:40.

How we go about doing this will be different for each of us because we are individuals in the eyes of God and we all have diverse talents. As we look up to Jesus we do some earthly good.
