Quirky

I found this quirky ordainment while I was staying with my father. I figured that there had to be a story attached to it so I picked it up and turned it over and around in my hand. The first thing I learnt was that it was made by my uncle, my mother’s brother, because his name was stamped into the bottom of the base. The second thing I learnt, just by looking at it, was that it was a piece of driftwood. My uncle must have picked it up somewhere and polished it, varnished it and glued it to the base. This of course is only it short story, the story that we all know about. But what about the other story, the hidden story.

This piece of driftwood would not have looked like this when it first shaped into whatever it was for its second adventure in life, after all its first adventure was growing as a tree.

Was it a part of a ship’s hull, a wheel, a bed bunk, a table or even part of the deck? We can only speculate as to what it might have been, it may have been something else completely different we just don’t know. What we do know is that at some point in its life, it was thrown into the sea and its transformation began with the force of the sea currents, the salt in the water, the sea creatures playing with it or whatever they do under the sea and the pounding of the waves. All these things worked their magic and turned it into the masterpiece that stands today in my father’s house.

This piece of driftwood is a bit like us, isn’t it? We start our lives as unborn souls, we are born and we face life here on earth. God then uses the elements of this life to shape us, making us something completely different to what we started out to be. Then comes our final chapter, our eternal one, the short one, in a sense because we are picked up by God our father, polished off and set in place to give glory to Him forever.
