Garden

There has been some drastic work carried out on my garden today. Now as I’m not allowed to do any heavy work I had to stand by and watch while my husband cut, pruned, pulled, chopped and sawed these bushes that just keep suckering up all over the place. It is the first time that the grape vine has seen the sun in quite a few years.

As I surveyed the opened space I couldn’t help but think about how sometimes we need to stand aside and watch as God carries out work on the lives of those we love and our own lives. I know that I have some bad habits that just seem to keep popping up time and again. As my husband worked I had to resist the temptation to tell him what to do; otherwise he would have just walked away and carried on with his own work. He had been kind enough to put that on hold while he cleaned up this patch of the garden. How often do we try and tell God how to fix someone’s life, particularly the lives of those that we love. I know I have, in the past, far too often and then got all upset when God just ignored my lack of wisdom.

Yet, just like my husband, who managed to do a really good job with my garden, God does a really good job with people’s lives when we leave Him alone. In fact He manages to do a great job despite our complaints and grumblings. Look at the way He managed to bring the people of Israel into the Promised Land in Exodus yet they were a people that complained so many times.

Hopefully each time I look at my garden I will remember to give God some space to work.
