Snack
So what did our soldiers in World War One snack on? From what I have been told, Beef Jerky was something that was common. My son has decided that he likes this snack which has no doubt been improved and certainly I understand that the packaging has improved.
I’m sure that those soldiers would be surprised that this is a snack that is appreciated by the younger generations. I know from personal experience that when you only have no choice about what you have to eat and it is the only food available for an extended period of time you get to the stage where you really can’t look at it again. After all facing that particular food again will bring back memories of when you had no choice but to eat it. Our soldiers would not be able to associate good memories with this snack.
As adults there are a lot of things that we have no choice about doing. This is something that is impossible for young children to understand. It often comes as a shock to young adults as they realise that there are certain things that just have to be done regardless as to how you feel about it.
Many of these young men were given no choice about going to war but they were adult enough to step up to the plate and did what had to be done for the loved ones at home and all future generations.
Snacks are meant to be something you eat in order to get to the next meal but many of these men had to survive on these snacks.
As we remember our soldiers this week I have to ask myself would I have to courage and determination that all these people showed. Do not forget their sacrifice.
