Walk to Emmaus
“And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.” (Luke 24:13-15).
Have you ever walked beside someone and not really understood how tough life was for them? I have! I could not even imagine just how difficult their circumstances were. I had not been through the many trials that they had endured and to be honest I have no desire to experience that level of stress. Yes, they had a strong faith and a strength that constantly amazes me but the cost seemed to have been astronomical.
Yet, as we messaged back and forth I was astonished to discover that they could not perceive how difficult my life was.
I thought about walking beside people. I thought about how these days we wear shoes, that are not always comfortable. There is a saying that tells us that we need to walk a mile in another person’s shoes to be able to relate to his/her problems. I thought about the various shoes I have that pinch me in different areas, yet, if someone else was wearing them they may not hurt them too but in different places then they do me. I realised then, I could still walk beside my friend and support them even though I can’t relate to their problems.
Friend if, I walk beside you, I may not understand what you are going through, just like I cannot feel the pain that you would feel if you wore my shoes. I promise though, I will walk along the road beside you, just like the two men walked to Emmaus, knowing full well that Jesus walks with us. One day we will reach our own Emmaus (Heaven) and we will be able to commune with Him in the feast that He has planned for all of us.
So, even if I don’t seem to understand you or you cannot understand me, let us support each other and walk together with Jesus by our side.
