Nothing New

This blog was first published on https://blog.canberradeclaration.org.au/2019/08/03/nothing-new/

While babysitting my granddaughter recently, I watched her playing with an empty box. I smiled and thought, children don’t change. Give them something inexpensive and they play quite happily. It’s hard to imagine our life without this little body. She makes such a wonderful contribution to our lives, tantrums and all.

A couple of days later, I was thinking about the abortion bill being presented to the New South Wales Parliament. It occurred to me that maybe society hasn’t changed much either.

“The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.” ~ Ecclesiastes 1:9.

It seems to me that we haven’t moved on from the days when two women stood before Solomon asking for his judgement over the life of another baby. One wanting to care for a baby and the other wanted to use it for reasons of her own (1 Kings 3:16-28). Now, there are just many more women and many more babies. Some wanting to care for and nurture children, but unable to for whatever reason; others being able but not wanting to. They are still waiting for our politicians to pass judgement.

While, I understand that many people would consider this issue far more complicated than it is being presented here, I also know that there is one Person who is willing to give insight and wisdom to anyone who asks.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” ~ James 1:5

Prayer: Dear Lord, give our politicians enough wisdom to debate this bill in the interest of everyone concerned. Remind them that they too, were once just a unborn baby. The reason they are able to stand up and make such an important contribution to our country is direct result of being born and growing up. They have all overcome the challenges that they faced during their childhood with a strength that brought them to this place in this time. May the children that they pass judgement on now, will be able, one day, stand beside them and make a similar contribution to the lives of future Australians.
